CSM Joe Derma III
Command Sergeant Major Joe Derma III appointed as the Command Sergeant Major of the California Army National Guard on 1 November 2021.
He joined the California Army National Guard on 12 June 1990 and has served in the Army National Guard for more than 31 years. He completed basic training as a Tank Armored Crewman at Fort Knox Army Post in Fort Knox, Kentucky. CSM Derma promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major on 1 October 2008. Prior to becoming the Command Sergeant Major of the California Army National Guard, CSM Derma served as the Command Sergeant Major for the 40th Infantry Division. CSM Derma also served as the Command Sergeant Major for the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat team and the 224th Sustainment Brigade. CSM Derma mobilized for combat duty and deployed overseas for combat operations in Afghanistan.
CSM Derma’s military and civilian education includes all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. CSM Derma attended San Diego State University for Educational Leadership.
Command Sergeant Major Derma has been awarded numerous awards and decorations including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal (2nd award), Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Campaign Star, Army Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal.
Command Sergeant Major Derma has been employed with the Calipatria Unified School District at Calipatria High School for more than 28 years in concurrence with his military service. CSM Derma will remain in his position as a Principal for the Calipatria High School.
CSM Derma and his wife, Deanna, of 31 years have three daughters (Vanessa, Allyson, Allyssa).
