It is with deepest sympathy that the California National Guard announces the death of Specialist Michael Mihalakis, age 18, in Baghdad, Iraq on 26 December 2003. He is survived by his mother and father.
Specialist Mihalakis joined the California Army National Guard on 6 September 2002. After basic training he was assigned to Company D, 795th Military Police Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, for the 17 week military police course. He graduated and returned to the 270th Military Police Company on 7 March 2003. The unit was mobilized shortly after his return and he was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq on 22 March 03. Specialist Mihalakis died as a result of a motor vehicle accident near Baghdad Airport. He will be remembered as a brave young soldier, with a deep sense of commitment and patriotism, who stepped forward to serve our country during a time of war.
