It is with deepest sympathy that the California National Guard announces the death of Sergeant Mike Takeshi Sonoda Jr., age 34. Sergeant Sonoda died as a result of an IED that struck his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq on 22 September 2005. He is survived by his father and mother.

Sergeant Sonoda joined the U.S. Army in 1995 and served until September of 1997 as a Parachute Rigger in the 325th Airborne, Vincenza, Italy. He had over 50 static line jumps and earned his Italian jump wings. In 1999, Sergeant Sonoda joined the California Army National Guard. During his enlistment he was assigned to elements of the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry (AASLT). From September of 2001 to March of 2002, Sergeant Sonoda served in Kuwait for Operation Enduring Freedom. In civilian life he worked for the United Postal Service as a Hazardous Material package inspector. Sergeant Sonoda was very close to his family and often talked about his parents.
