It is with deepest sympathy that The California National Guard announces the death of First Lieutenant Michael W. Vega, age 41, on 20 March 2004 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. Lieutenant Vega was fatally injured as a result of operations in Diwaniyah, Iraq, on 11 March 2004. He is survived by his father and mother, four brothers and three sisters.
Lieutenant Vega joined the California Army National Guard on 29 January 2002. He was an experienced soldier, having previously served on active duty with the United States Army from April 1982 to April 1986. His return to military service, after completing his Bachelor of Science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, was to serve in a leadership position. He achieved his goal by completing officer candidate school and was commissioned on 17 August 2002. He was assigned to the 223rd Military Intelligence Battalion and attended the Military Intelligence Basic Course at Ft Huachuca, Arizona. He was mobilized on 3 January 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lieutenant Vega was a highly qualified and respected leader.
