In the United States, Inspectors General (IGs) have over a 200 year history of inspecting, investigating, training, and performing duties necessary to support the missions of their respective organizations. (see History)
In that tradition, the California State Military Department IG, herein known as the Military Department IG, is an extension of the eyes, ears, voice, and conscience of The Adjutant General (TAG).
