In the United States,
Inspectors General (IGs) have over a 200 year history of inspecting,
investigating, training, and performing duties necessary to support the
missions of their respective organizations. (see History)
In that tradition, the California Military Department IG, herein known as the Military Department IG, is an extension of the eyes, ears, voice, and conscience of The Adjutant General (TAG).
The Military Department IG is appointed by the California Governor and reports directly to TAG or when appropriate directly to the Governor. IGs are honest brokers and consummate fact finders. Their primary functions are training, assisting, inspecting, and investigating.
The Military Department IG operates within an environment consisting of the California Military Department and its members, retirees, and members of the public needing assistance regarding its matters, activities or processes. The Military Department IG is sufficiently independent so that those requesting assistance will do so with the confidence that matters presented to the IG will remain as confidential as possible.
The Military Department IG handles matters that are under the jurisdiction of the California Military Department.
